SYNOPSIS ・あらすじ

ACT 1・1幕:

Meet Pete and Jane and Leon and Sonja. Pete is married to Jane. Sonja is married to Leon. Pete meets Sonja in a bar and they go back to a cheap hotel room. Leon meets Jane in a bar and they go back to a cheap hotel room. A double infidelity. Except that Pete and Sonja don’t go through with it, while Leon and Jane do. Pete and Sonja discover this when they go home after their failed attempt. Sonja leaves Leon. Pete leaves Jane. Pete meets Leon in a bar after Pete has a crazy encounter with an enraged woman who accuses him of something. They talk. Leon knows Pete is Jane’s husband but Pete doesn’t know Leon (or Harold he tells him) is Jane’s husband. Jane meets Sonja in a bar, they talk. The two women eventually find out that Jane was the woman Leon had an affair with and that Sonja is his wife. Sonja and Pete decide to return to their homes. When Sonja goes back home, Leon tells her a story about a man (Neil) he met on the beach, while he was jogging who wears brown brogues and keeps writing letters to his ex-lover (Sarah). Leon tells the story of how this man one day sees his ex-lover on the bus and follows her (stalks her) and eventually tries to orchestrate a chance meeting at her favorite restaurant. When the day finally arrives, he sees her in the restaurant, and for a moment thinks she recognizes him. But, she walks right past him, and into the arms of another man. Leon, concerned for the welfare of the man, returned to the beach, where he met this man. He sees no trace of him, except for his brown brogues, which Leon takes. This story connects the two and is a first step to reconnection. When Pete goes back home, he tells Jane he wants to reverse the vasectomy he had many years ago and have children… well, one… maybe. Jane doesn’t respond in the positive way he expected. Jane tells him a story about a neighbor (Nick) whom she witnessed throwing a woman’s shoe into a vacant block. She says she went outside to say hello to the man and discovered that he was badly cut and had blood and mud all over him. While waiting for Pete to come home,. She reports him after hearing news that a local woman (Valerie) is missing and the neighbor is arrested. This story creates a separation between Jane and Pete and we see that their marriage is on its way out.

ジェーンとピート、ソニアとリオン、二組の夫婦がそれぞれのパートナーに不満を持っている。ある夜、ジェーンとソニアは別のバーで偶然にもお互いの夫にナンパされる。ジェーンはソニアの夫リオンと安ホテルへ行き、ソニアはジェーンの夫ピートと安ホテルへ。パートナーへの不満や愛情、不倫への罪悪感や高揚感、色々な感情が渦巻く中で、ソニアとピートはギリギリ一線を越えず終わり、ジェーンとリオンは一夜の関係を持ってしまう。

その夜、それぞれの自宅で、ソニアは夫リオンの帰りを、ピートは妻ジェーンの帰りを待っていた。しばらくしてリオンとジェーンが帰宅するが、お互いに隠し事がある夫婦の会話はぎこちない。ソニアとピートは耐えきれず、バーで出会った相手と関係を持ちかけたことを告白する。一線を越えてしまっているリオンとジェーンは打ち明けることも怒ることもできず、どう関係を修復すればいいのかわからない。『どうしてほしい？』と聞くと、キスをして許してほしいと求めるピートとソニア。 ジェーンはピートに、リオンはソニアにキスをする。が、キスに異性の匂いや存在を感じたピートとソニアは、裏切られたのは自分の方だと知り、家を出る。

数日後、とあるバーにて。 リオンが一人で飲んでいると、偶然ピートがそのバーへ息を切らして入ってくる。 胸を押さえ苦しそうにしているピートに、リオンは親切心から大丈夫か、と声をかける。 ピートは、道を歩いていたら突然知らない女性に怒鳴りつけられ訴えられそうになった、と話す。触るどころか話しかけたわけでもなく、ただ前を歩く女性の横を追い越そうとしただけ、女性のあまりの剣幕に怖くなり、その場を逃げ出した、本当に自分は何もしていない、と初対面のリオンに取り乱す様子のピート。リオンはピートが落ち着くまで話に付き合う。ピートが会話の流れから妻の浮気が原因で家に帰っていない、言うと、リオンは自分の家庭も似たようなもの、立場は逆で自分が浮気をして妻が家出中だ、と告白する。無意識にピートが妻ジェーンの名前を出したことで、レオンは自分がピートの妻の浮気相手だと気づく。家出中のピートに、奥さんは浮気相手に本気なはずがない、家に帰って元通りの生活に戻ってはどうか？とアドバイスする。別れ際、ピートは自己紹介をするが、リオンは本当の名前を言わずバーを後にする。

同日、別のバーにて。 ダンスフロアで踊るソニアを見つめるジェーン。自分への視線に気づいたソニアは、ジェーンに話しかける。内向的なジェーンは踊りたくても踊る勇気がないから羨ましい、と言い、お互いどうして一人でバーにいるのか話し出すと、共通の悩み『浮気』が原因であることがわかる。ソニアは家出中、ジェーンは一夜だけという前提で出会った相手にもう一度会いたいと期待して同じバーに来たと言う。自分なら連絡先を聞いておくのに、聞かなかったの？名前は聞いたの？というソニアの質問に、ジェーンはリオンという名前を口にする。奥さんに愛情があるからこそ、一晩だけと決めていたんじゃないか、妻のいない生活なんて想像できないと言ってた、というジェーンの言葉を聞いて涙を流すソニア。一方、ジェーンは夫がいない生活はどんなだろう、と常に考えていると言う。涙の理由を聞かれたソニアは、自分がリオンの妻、ソニアだと告げる。ジェーンは『知ってる』と言い、ソニアが何か言いかけるのを止めてバーを後にした。

数日後、リオンとソニアの家。 そこには家出から戻ってきたソニアの姿がある。リオンはソニアがいない間の出来事や自分の感情をゆっくり語り出す。 ソニアがいなくなってからジョギングを始め、そのジョギング途中に一人の男とぶつかったこと。ソニアが出ていったイライラからその男に怒鳴り、その男が反撃もせず泣き出したこと。後日偶然その男をビーチで見かけ、話しかけたこと。その男にはかつて婚約者がいて、突然失踪し長い間行方不明だったこと。けれどある時偶然バスで見かけ、後をつけたこと。家や職場、行動範囲を把握して、偶然を装い声をかけようとしたら、相手は全く覚えてなかったこと。 その男の話を語る中で、リオンはどれだけソニアを失うことが怖かったか伝える。 その後ジョギング中にその男を見かけることはなく、男が履いていた特徴的な革靴が波打際に放置されたままだった、と語った。ソニアはリオンを許し始めている自分に気付く。

 ジェーンがリビングで踊っている。家出から戻ってきていたピートが意を決して、病院に行ってきた、と話し始める。ジェーンはピートの体調を心配するが、ピートが医師を訪ねたのは、パイプカットの再生ができるかどうかを確認するためで、配偶者の同意があれば手術は可能とのこと。ピートなりに、今回の不倫は子供がいないのが原因と考えたからだ。しかしジェーンは、もう手遅れかもしれない、と言いピートが帰ってこない間にあった出来事を話し始める。 眠れないジェーンが夜中に窓から外を見ると、ちょうど隣人のニックが車で帰ってきて、そのまま玄関に向かわず助手席から何かを拾って空き地に放り投げるのを目撃する。それがハイヒール片方だけに見えたジェーンは異様さを感じ、外に出てニックに挨拶をする。ニックの妻、ポーラとは何度か家を行き来したことがあるが、ニックとは顔見知り程度で、ポーラからは最近失業中のニックがイライラしていて、たまに暴力的に感じる、と聞いていた。家に入ろうとするニックの顔に玄関の明かりが当たり、血だらけの顔や泥だらけの格好をはっきりと見てしまったジェーンは、夜中から行方不明の女性に関する報道を知り警察に連絡する。警察がジェーンの家を訪れ、その後空き地からはハイヒールが見つかる。警察の訪問後しばらくして、ジェーンの家に訪問者が現れる。その訪問者が警察だと思い込んだジェーンは、確認せずドアを開けると、玄関先にいたのはニックとその娘だった。娘が熱を出してしまったが、自分も所用で家を空けなければならず、ポーラが仕事から戻るまで娘を見てもらえないか、と。ジェーンは戸惑いながらも面倒を見る。ポーラが迎えにきたのはその夜遅くで、ポーラはニックが警察に連行されたため面会に行ったという。ポーラは、号泣しながら取り乱していたものの、全面的にニックの言葉を信用し、彼の無実を疑っていない。その信頼関係を羨ましく思うジェーン。夫婦であるふたりが信頼し合えていたら、それだけでいいのよ、と。自分たちはもうその関係には戻れないとピートとジェーンは気付いている。

ACT 2・2幕

Meet Neil and Sarah, Nick and Valerie. Valerie, a therapist, is in a phone box somewhere on a dark side road. Her car has broken down. She keeps calling her husband (John), but despite the late hour, he isn’t home. She keeps calling him but he doesn’t pick up the phone so she leaves him messages. Neil is at home writing a letter, one of several he writes to his ex-girlfriend of many years ago, Sarah. He wants to know why she left him. They had plans to marry but she went off to Europe and never came back. He is writing her these letters because (as we know from ACT 1) he saw Sarah on the bus and then in the restaurant, kissing another guy. Sarah is in a therapy session, she is talking about receiving Neil’s letter. She is upset about seeing him, someone she didn’t even recognize until later was her former lover, someone she lived with. She can’t understand why he hasn’t moved on. Nick Robson is in an interrogation room, he has been arrested because a woman (Jane) saw him throw a shoe into a vacant block and his face is suspiciously cut up. He is unemployed and has a drinking problem, and has been hurting his wife a little. Valerie is still calling John, it’s nearly midnight and he still isn’t home. She shares with him that she is seeing a client that she doesn’t really like. Sarah starts to hum a melody, asking her therapist if she knows it. Valerie questions John and their estranged relationship, when did they stop being close?

The four go into a description of the dream. In the dream Neil finds a beautiful river of water, takes off his clothes and dives in. Nick walks through thick bushland where the green cuts his arms and legs. Sarah walks a beach at the foot of a high cliff. Valerie is walking along a high cliff, on it’s edge. Neil sees a man watching him. Nick sees a naked man swimming in the water. Sarah senses somebody is watching her and Valerie sees a woman at the foot of the cliff. Then the dream becomes a nightmare. Nick can’t find a way out. Neil can’t seem to reach the riverbank. Sarah is stuck in the sand as rocks come crashing down while Valerie starts falling as the cliff starts to crumble away. Neil feels something brush up against his leg and then…. they wake up.

We now return to Valerie and Nick. Nick is telling his story in the interrogation room and we hear Valerie talking to John on the answering machine. She sees headlights, it’s Nick’s car. Nick tells the story of how he picked up Valerie in his car because her car had broken down and though he didn’t really want to, he agreed to drive her home. She seemed scared but appreciative until he took a turn onto a road she probably didn’t know about and it seemed to frighten her and before he could stop her, she jumped out of the car. He says he chased her through the bush and that’s why he was covered in cuts and bruises. He asked her to trust him but she says she can’t and he ended up leaving her behind. He goes back home before he realizes she had left one of her shoes in his car and so threw it into the vacant block, thinking it would look bad. He then sees his neighbor (Jane) and tries to act casual, knowing he is covered in cuts. He goes back to his house to find that his wife was asleep and unconcerned that he was home late, which disappoints him. During this time, Neil is writing his final letter to Sarah. He tells her about this guy he knows at work tells him about another guy, whose wife has disappeared. She apparently kept leaving him messages, and he always was leaving messages on the answering machine, missing each other. He hears her final message about a car coming so she can get a lift, at almost midnight and so he sits in the house waiting for her. Neil ends the letter by saying that they never found the woman, that she never came home and that this guy was arrested because his neighbor saw him trying to throw away a woman’s shoe. Valerie is in the bush, she is humming, the song is the same as Sarah’s.

４人の登場人物が別々の場面を同時進行する。

― セラピストのバレリーは、仕事の帰りに車が故障してしまいロードサービスの番号もわからず公衆電話から自宅に電話をする。深夜にも関わらず、夫ジョンはまだ帰宅しておらず留守電応答メッセージが流れる。苛立ちを見せながらも用件を話し15分後にまた電話する、と残して電話を切る。

― 長い間一人の女性の帰りを待ち続けているニールはその女性セーラ宛てに手紙を書いている。 昔の荷物からセーラの私物や旅行先からセーラが送った手紙が出てきて、古傷に触れる覚悟で手紙を全て読み返し、なぜこんなにも愛情に満ち溢れていたセーラが自分の前から突然消えてしまったのか理由を知りたい、と綴っている。

― ニールが手紙を送る相手セーラは、セラピストとの面会中。過去に付き合っていた男性を偶然見かけた最近の出来事について話している。その場では知り合いかもしれない程度にしか思い出せず、話しかけようとした男性を故意に無視した。その後、セーラの自宅に手紙が届くようになる。

― バレリーは再度自宅に電話をするが、相変わらず留守電になる。いつも通勤で使う道とは違い街灯もなく車も全く通らない。入れ違いになると困るから、直接話すまで探しにこないで、と録音する。

― ニールは、なぜセーラが自分の元へ戻ってこなかったのか、理由を知りたがっている。どんな風にセーラから愛を貰って、そしてセーラへの愛は今も変わらない、と手紙は続く。

― セーラは恋愛に関してドライで、相手の愛情が重く感じると次の恋に進みたくなってしまう、と自身の恋愛観や傾向をセラピストに語る。やはりニールがなぜそこまで自分に執着するのか理解できない。プロポーズされて深く考えず返事をした後、ヨーロッパ旅行にいったのはニールから逃げるための口実だったと語る。

― ピートとジェーンの隣人、ニックが警察で事情聴取を受けている。ジェーンが目撃したあの夜のことを静かに話し始める。現在は無職だが、以前の職場であるホテルのバーで水曜日の夜に同僚達と軽く食事をして帰宅するのが習慣で、仕事を辞めた後も続けていて、その夜も元同僚と一緒だった。失業中ということもあり家にいても居心地が悪く、その日はいつもより遅い時間までバーにいて、帰路に着いたのが夜11時45分頃。流石に家族は心配しているだろう、と急ぐ気持ちを抑えながら運転していた。

― バレリーが何度か入れた留守電は、小銭がなくなってしまう、でも車のヘッドライトが遠くに見えるからあの車に止まってもらい家まで乗せてもらう、というメッセージを最後に途絶える。

― ニックは、公衆電話の横で手を振る女性を夜中に放っておけない、という親切心から家まで送ることにした。女性はお礼を言って車に乗ったものの、近道をするために道を曲がったところで突然車から飛び出し、逃げるように森に入っていった。最近引っ越してきたと言っていたその女性が近道を知らず勘違いしたのでは、と思い車を止めて女性を追いかけ、大声でここは近道なんだ、と伝えたが女性は戻ってこず、辺りが暗くて転んだ時に顔を怪我し服が汚れた、とニックが説明する。

― セーラがニールからの手紙を取り出して読み始める。

― ニールはセーラに手紙を書いている。同僚に聞いた、ある夫婦の話を綴る。仕事が遅くなった夫が家に電話をしても誰も出ず、夜中に帰宅すると、車が故障して迎えに来て欲しいとか、通りかかりの車を見つけたから乗せてもらう、というような奥さんからの留守電が何件も入っていた。そしてその夜から奥さんは行方不明。数日後一人の男が警察に連行された。どうして愛していた女性が二度と戻ってこなかったのか。この話が頭から離れない、とセーラへ思いをぶつける。

― ニックは女性を探すことを諦め、女性を車に乗せたことを後悔しながら自宅へと急ぐ。自宅に着き車から降りようとした時にハイヒールの片方を見つけ、焦って空き地に投げ捨てたところを隣の奥さんが見ていた、と一通り話終わると、妻に会せてほしいと訴える。

― ニールはこれが最後の手紙だ、ずっと君のことを思ってる、と綴った。

ACT 3・3幕

Meet John Knox. He came home one night and his wife wasn’t there. He sits alone in his house. Detective Leon Zat, husband to Sonja, enters the house. He begins to interrogate John about what happened. John resists talking to yet another cop. Leon wants to hear the messages that Valerie has left. John doesn’t really want to as they are personal, they talk about their relationship and…. Valerie mentions a client. Leon ends up convincing him to play the messages. As the first message plays, we see Valerie and Sarah. They are in Valerie’s therapy office. Valerie is asking Sarah about the man she is seeing now (not Neil). It turns out Sarah is seeing a married man. Sarah doesn’t feel like Valerie is very communicative and forces Valerie to share her analysis of her, which is that she manipulates men into loving her and then she abandons them once she achieves this goal. This session is overlapped by Valerie’s messages and John is affected by them. In the session, Sarah confronts Valerie about her lack of caring of her, she feels Valerie doesn’t like her. Valerie’s questions increasing focused on finding out about Sarah’s lover and to defend his wife. Through Leon’s interrogation we discover that John has been having an affair with another woman and that Valerie, his wife, has a dark past. She was abused by her father and she has a pathological fear of men, especially men she doesn’t know. John begins to describe a recent incident where John and Valerie were out to dinner and while John was paying the bill, Valerie got into a huge argument with a man she was accusing of saying something rude to her. We see Valerie completely on edge. John remarks to Leon that he thinks his wife sees abuse and danger everywhere and that she may unconsciously be influencing her clients into making them feel they are like her. Leon defends Valerie and her view and cannot understand John’s lack of compassion for his wife.

John begins to defend himself. He speaks of the hard truths, that he has wanted to leave his wife for a long time but couldn’t because he felt she always expected him to betray her so he wanted to prove her wrong. He has time and again wished her ill, wished she would get in a car crash so that the relationship would end. Leon presses him to speak of what happened this night. John admits that while he didn’t hurt her, he chose to ignore her message. He could have picked up the phone for the final message, he had just gotten inside the house, but he chose to let her hang up, knowing she would never come home.

The final scene we hear Sarah’s answering machine, Sarah is there but doesn’t pick up the phone. The message is from John asking her why she doesn’t contact him anymore. He is in some trouble and needs her. We end the show with his final pleas for her to pick up the phone.

 登場人物は４人、二つの場面が同時進行する。

― 警察官のリオンがバレリーの夫ジョンを訪ねる。ジョンからの通報を受けて警察の聞き取り調査が一通り終わった後、リオンが単独で再度部屋にやってきた。ジョンの説明には僅かな時間のズレがあったり、警察に連絡するまで時間が空いていたりしたが、しっかりと時計を確認していなかった、と言い訳する。リオンは次にバレリーからの留守電を全て確認することを要求、ジョンは個人的な内容が録音されていることを理由に拒否するも、リオンの任務であるということから留守電メッセージを再生した。

― セラピストのバレリーはクライアントのセーラと面会中。セーラが交際中の男性の名前を口にしないことから、バレリーは交際相手が既婚者であることを指摘する。その関係を実生活の夫と自分に置き換え、心穏やかでいられないバレリー。対するセーラはいかにその男性の愛情が重く、また彼がどれだけ奥さんと別れたがっているかを語る。セーラは既に愛情が消え夫婦関係の破綻した結婚に執着する彼の奥さんのことが理解できない。奥さんは愛される地位から落ちていて、今は自分がその地位にいるのだ、とセーラは既婚男性から愛されている自分を自慢げに語るが、バレリーはその不貞行為をたしなめる。

― 留守電の録音を確認したジョンとリオンは、バレリーについて話し始める。男性に対する対人恐怖症があり、特に初対面の男性に対しては病的であるにもかかわらず、なぜ知らない男の車に乗ったのか、疑問を投げかけるジョンに対して、リオンは、もしかして偶然知り合いの男性が通りかかったか、又は女性という可能性もある、と答える。バレリーは父親に虐待を受けた経験から、男性に対する考え方が歪んでしまっている、とジョンは続ける。バレリーは潜在的に、結婚生活の中で傷つけられることを期待している。そのくせその考えが間違っていることを証明したがっているのだと。リオンが本当のところ何があったのかを聞くと、ジョンは別の愛する女性と一緒だった、と打ち明ける。しかし本当に自分は何もしていない、帰宅した時に電話が鳴っていたが、受話器を取らず、ただバレリーが電話を切るのを待った、その時にはもう二度とバレリーに会うことはないとわかっていた、と語った。

― セーラの家の電話が鳴る。セーラの声で録音された応答メッセージの後には、セーラに会いたい、というジョンのメッセージが吹き込まれていた。
